Youth Rowing Yearly Snapshot

New to rowing? Here’s a big-picture glance at what the sport looks like throughout the year. Our youth rowing programs coincide with the academic calendar: fall, winter, spring.  We also offer a variety of summer camps that provide new rowers a chance to try the sport, and experienced rowers the opportunity to stay on the water.

Fall

Distance - 5,000m
Format - Time Trial (think cross country)

Fall rowing is similar to cross-country in that the races are longer than those in the spring.  Regattas have a time-trial format where one boat starts 20-30 seconds before another, and each boat races the clock. Watching the colors change from the water is an amazing way to spend a few hours after school.

Winter

Indoor Rowing & Crosstraining

Rowing is a power-endurance sport.  Athletes not only need to be strong, but they must also develop incredible stamina for the spring racing.  We train indoors on rowing machines and also spend time developing body awareness and strength with weekly yoga sessions and weight training.

Spring

Distance - 2,000m
Format - Buoyed Course (similar format to 100m sprint on a track)

If you've watched a rowing race, this is most likely the format you've seen.  The spring season is the sprint season.  Boats line up seven or eight wide, start at the same time, and race down the course.

We currently run two youth teams throughout the school year - please register for what you can commit to

  • Junior Competitive Team

    Learn to Train

We introduce the sport of rowing to our Jr. Comp team athletes in a fun, safe and encouraging environment. Our athletes will spend most of their time learning how to scull with some sweep rowing. Sculling is the style of rowing where each athlete has two oars, sweep rowing refers to rowing where each athlete has one oar. Athletes will learn proper rowing technique and progress through the sport with a focus on fun and team development.
